Vascular lesions, often referred to as spider veins, are small dilated blood vessels that appear directly underneath the skin’s surface. They may appear as a single vessel, or as angry red/purple clusters that look like a road map. Although most common amongst women, spider veins and small vascular lesions (telangiectasias) that can be experienced by anyone at any age. These unattractive vessels can result from multiple factors including aging, genetics, hormones, and activity level. Like pigmented lesions, most vascular lesions are not harmful but are considered an undesirable cosmetic blemish. They are most often found on legs, nose, cheeks, ears and ankles. Small vascular lesions like Cherry Angiomas (small red dots) occur most commonly on the trunk of your body.
Varicose veins are very different than spider veins and are not treatable with this form of laser. During your initial consult, your Certified Laser Technician will assess whether or not you are a good candidate for this form of therapy. In the event that you are not, we will refer you to another provider who specializes in varicose vein treatment, such as a vascular surgeon.
Laser Vein Therapy is a non-invasive treatment that utilizes laser energy to remove unwanted veins. During treatment, our YAG Laser will emit light energy into the vein, causing it to collapse and safely coagulate it without damaging the surrounding skin. Over time, the vessel will fade and disappear. Laser treatment works best on small to mid-sized veins. (Vessels that are less than 1 mm wide are ideal.) You may experience some discomfort with Laser Vein Therapy, but most patients find it completely tolerable. Many compare the feeling to a hot snap of a rubber band against the skin. The treatment is relatively quick and most patients see improvement after just one treatment, although 2 to 3 treatments are recommended to see an optimal result.
After your laser treatment, you may see a small bruise form at the treatment site. This is completely normal and beneficial. As the bruise heals, the area should appear unblemished and clear. Bruising can be covered with makeup concealer, but many patients, especially if the spider veins are on their legs, will opt to start treatment in the Fall/Winter when their legs will not be exposed.
*Please note, your Certified Laser Technician may suggest the use of an alternative treatment, such as Hyfrecator, to treat your vascular lesion.
