The Top 4 Procedures Men are Requesting and Why!

The American Society for Esthetic Plastic Surgery (ASPS) revealed recently that Americans spent over $16 billion dollars in 2016 on plastic surgery and cosmetic treatments. They also noted that one sector of this population is on the increase…MEN. Since the ASPS began collecting data in 1997, there has been a marked 273 percent increase in documented procedures on men, with a 43 percent increase from 2014 alone! Why are men turning to both surgical and non-surgical procedures and which are the most requested?

“Men cite several reasons for requesting plastic surgery and other treatments in our practice,” shares Dr. Garrett Griffin, a double board certified Facial Plastic Surgeon with Midwest Facial Plastic Surgery. “For some, they simply want to look as young as they feel, or, perhaps their wives had a procedure with us and now they want to look as great as their spouse,” Dr. Griffin continues. “Men and women of the Baby Boomer generation are taking better care of themselves and they really want to look as good as they feel!”

Another explanation for this rise in male cosmetic surgery is the economy and the state of the business world, according to Business Insider publication. It is a more competitive job market and men see looking younger and more attractive as an asset to keep them viable and competitive with their more youthful counterparts. With countless studies citing data that potential employers consistently rate younger and more handsome applicants as smarter and more motivated, having a rejuvenated appearance can give men a leg up in the business world!

“In addition to seeing a rise in surgical procedures at our practice for men, we have also noticed an increase in men requesting non-surgical procedures such as Botox, Kybella and dermal fillers,” shared Dr. Christopher Tolan, also a double board certified Facial Plastic Surgeon at Midwest Facial Plastic Surgery. “Obviously being a man myself, I find it so refreshing that men are starting to see that these treatments don’t need to look obvious or overdone,” he continues, “they are truly about making men look like a more youthful, attractive version of themselves.”

Both Drs. Tolan and Griffin agree that the following surgical procedures are some of the most requested from their growing male patient base:

1. Blepharoplasty: Eyelid Rejuvenation

As we age, it is natural for both men and women to experience sagging, drooping and/or puffiness under and around the eyes. Loose hanging skin, heavy eyebrows that drape over the upper eyelids, and bulging fat pads below the eyes can make a man look as if he has lost his vitality. It can also result in friends and colleagues asking if he is tired or angry. Fortunately, blepharoplasty surgery can tighten upper and lower eyelid skin, remove bulging fat pads, and restore a more youthful and awake eye area.

2. Neck Lift

Although we often hear women complain about a “turkey neck,” this aging of neck skin affects men in much the same way! In fact, many men complain that it is difficult to wear a tie with a dress shirt anymore because they hate how their loose neck skin hangs over their collar. The sagging and drooping that occur on our neck skin and muscles as we age can also make a man look heavier than he actually is. Ideally, a strong jaw line and a defined chin-neck junction are considered attractive for the male face, so when everything starts to head south, a man can lose the features that make him look the most masculine. A surgical neck lift can restore a man’s youthfulness and vitality by tightening the neck skin and strengthening the jawline

3. Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)

When it comes to attractive facial features, proportion is everything. A nose that is too large can throw off the balance of your other features and even make your chin or jaw appear smaller, weak and less masculine. In fact, many surgeons will simultaneously perform a chin implant procedure with a rhinoplasty to further balance facial proportions. Nose surgery requires very advanced skill and many men seek out a physician like Drs. Griffin or Tolan, who are double board certified ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) physician AND a Facial Plastic Surgeon for this procedure to ensure the best outcomes.

4. Chin Augmentation / Chin Implant

As discussed with Rhinoplasty, the chin and jawline are key features of masculinity on the male face. If the chin is receding, or out of proportion with other features, it can dramatically impact the appearance of the overall face. A chin augmentation involves enhancing the proportion, balance, and appearance of the chin by the use of an implant. In addition, liposuction along the jawline may be used to sharpen your features even more. Your surgeon may also recommend that you receive Kybella treatments, a series of injections that dissolve the fat under your chin to further enhance your outcome.

The world of plastic surgery is becoming less and less “taboo” for men. Since its creation after World War I, society’s perception of plastic surgery has continued to evolve from something seen as superfluous and selfish to something that is a tool for people to simply look as young as they feel. As we continue to live longer with a markedly better quality of life, it makes sense that we demand procedures that keep us looking and feeling our best, regardless of if we are man or woman!
