A chemical peel is one of the least invasive ways to improve the appearance of your skin. Sun exposure, acne, or just getting older can leave your skin tone uneven, wrinkled, spotted or scarred.
Chemical peels are common skincare treatments performed by a licensed skincare professional for those that want to smooth the texture of their skin by removing the damaged, outer layers. This type of skincare treatment is typically performed on the face, though can also be used to improve the appearance of your skin on your neck, chest and hands.
At Midwest Facial Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Skincare, we use these well tolerated, non-invasive chemical peels to address the damaged outer layer of the skin and the concerns of each skin type.
Skin Medica Peels have been shown to:
- Reduce visible signs of aging, including the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Achieve a healthier, more radiant, and youthful appearance by brightening the skin and improving its color and clarity
- Enhance skin texture for smoother, softer skin
- Minimize the appearance of skin imperfections like age/dark spots, acne-prone skin, and premature again caused by sun exposure
There are 3 levels of peels your aesthetician can apply, and downtime can range from a couple hours to a few days depending on the peel. Optimal results are achieved after 3 to 6 peels; be sure to ask us about our low-cost options when purchasing your individual treatment plan. Be mindful that chemical peels can make your skin temporarily more sensitive to the sun, so you want to make sure you choose a time to do them when you are not planning to have excessive direct sunlight for an extended period of time. You will also want to invest in a good SPF to help you achieve the best results.
So, what are you waiting for? Give Midwest Facial Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Skincare a call at (651) 632-9700 to schedule your appointment with our highly qualified, licensed aestheticians today! We have offices located in Eagan & Woodbury for your convenience. We look forward to providing for all of your skincare needs!

I enjoy the creativity and challenge that comes with performing aesthetic facial surgery, but also really enjoy using my cosmetic surgery skills to help people look their best after cancer surgery. This woman had a small cancer in her parotid gland (a salivary gland), which is right in front of the ear. The cancer was invading the salivary duct, requiring complete removal of the salivary gland by her oncologist Dr. Gendron. The salivary gland is the size of an egg, so this left a very large depression or “divot” on the right side of the face. By moving a nearby muscle to fill the divot, and performing a mini-facelift on the right side, I was able to create near perfect facial symmetry for this patient.
These pictures were taken 3 weeks after surgery. This is a good example of how the facelift incision is well-hidden and becomes invisible after just a few weeks. You can see how the mini-facelift in the left image has tightened the skin and removed fine lines in the face and jowl. A more complete facelift as would be performed for purely aesthetic regions would achieve additional improvement in the jowl, and tighten the neck skin as well.

Dr. Garrett Griffin left the chilly Twin Cities on February 27th, 2015 to attend a conference in Las Vegas on using Bellafill for acne scarring. Acne scarring affects millions of Americans, often making people self-conscious and less confident in social and work settings. Resurfacing using Pixel (Erbium:YAG) or CO2 lasers, and facial fillers like Sculptra or Juvederm are some of the interventions that are more commonly performed for acne scarring at Midwest Facial Plastic Surgery and Aesthetic Skincare.
Bellafill is the new name for the facial filler formerly known as Artefill. Bellafill just received FDA approval to be used for acne scarring. Bellafill is made of 20% bovine collagen mixed with 80% PMMA microspheres. A skin test is required before receiving Bellafill to ensure that a person is not allergic to the bovine collagen portion. Bellafill is injected using a small needle in the same manner as other facial fillers. After injection, the body replaces the bovine collagen with a person’s own collagen, which forms around the PMMA microspheres.
Bellafill has several important differences in comparison to other facial fillers. Unlike all other fillers including Juvederm, Restylane, Belotero, Perlane, Sculptra or Radiesse, Bellafill should be considered permanent. Bellafill cannot be dissolved the way that hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm and Restylane can be dissolved. Rarely, in less than 1% of individuals, the immune system can have an unusual reaction to Bellafill creating chronic inflammation called a granuloma, and in these rare cases, Bellafill may need to be surgically removed. The fact that Bellafill is essentially permanent makes it a good filler for scarring, which is a problem that most people would like to have improved forever.
Not all types of acne scars are good candidates for improvement for Bellafill. Acne scars are typically divided into 3 types: icepick, box car, and rolling scars. Ice pick and box car scars are deeper than they are wide, with sharp edges and these scars are not good candidates for Bellafill. However, rolling scars which are wider than they are deep, with gentle curves at the edges, are excellent candidates for Bellafill. Other types of depressed scars, not just acne scars, can often be improved with Bellafill as well. Midwest Facial Plastic Surgery is excited to now offer Bellafill as an option for patients with acne or other types of depressed scars.

We’ve all seen the numerous advertisements featuring beautiful, hairless bodies promoting a product or service that guarantees a hair free and care free lifestyle; but is that the truth?
As a licensed aesthetician with over 15 years of experience, here are real questions I receive and the stripped down facts about laser hair reduction.
Q: Can only lighter skin tones have laser hair reduction?
A: No. Many lasers, including our Lumenis Duet laser, are safe for all skin tones.
Q: Do I have to have dark hair to have laser hair reduction?
A: Although dark hair responds the best, any hair with visible pigment should have success with laser hair reduction. The only people who would not be good candidates would be those with white, gray or red hair. This is due to a lack of pigment that the laser needs to use as its target.
Q: Should I allow my hair to grow out prior to coming in for a treatment, like with waxing?
A: No. The area that is being treated should be freshly shaved the day of or day before the treatment. The reason for this is that if the hair is long it could singe which could cause a heat injury, i.e. blisters on the surface of the skin. Also, we want all of the energy from the laser traveling to the base of the follicle, under the skin - not the tip.
Q: Can I achieve permanent results in just one treatment?
A: No. In general, most areas require a minimum of 6 treatments to achieve the desired results most people are looking for. Some areas of the body may require additional treatments due to hair density or hormones stimulating growth. Each individual is unique and may respond differently.
Overall, the truth of the matter is that the results of this treatment can be an extremely convenient and liberating for many people – some even say life-changing. If you have struggled with persistent or unwanted hair growth, consider laser hair reduction. This service can leave you not only feeling hair free, though confident as you bare skin during the warm weather seasons.

I recently had a little girl and noticed that she looks like a little old lady. But why is this? The primary reason is that both very young and very old people have too much skin for the bone underneath. As children get older and become adolescents and then young adults, the facial skeleton grows more than the skin around it, such that in our mid-20’s we achieve a “sweet spot” when the facial skeleton stretches our skin nice and tight and gives our eyes, nose, chin and neck nice definition with no visible wrinkling. As we enter our 30’s and then after, we begin losing bone again and our skin gets more stretchy so it doesn’t suck down onto the bone as well as it does in our 20’s. Eventually, we end up looking like little babies again with folds around our mouth, jowls, and extra skin above our eyes.
Aesthetic procedures target this imbalance between facial skin and bone. A facelift or eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) removes the extra skin and tightens the skin that is left behind. Facial fillers like Juvederm, Sculptra or fat grafting give volume back to the face, which is like making the facial skeleton a littler larger. This creates a more youthful bone to skin ratio, and makes a person look younger. Skin treatments like peels, skin pen or photorejuvenation (IPL) are literally the icing on the cake, evening skin pigment and texture to make a person look even younger. I use the mnemonic LFS to remind me to think about Lifting (surgery), Filling, and Skin during an aesthetic consultation to make sure I achieve the very best improvement for the patient.
Our team of board-certified physicians, certified clinical assistants and licensed aestheticians recently hosted our Annual Fall Open House at our Woodbury location during the month of November. We invited guests, friends and family members to join us to learn about the most effective skincare treatment options and latest trends on the market. Over 100 individuals attended our open house, enjoyed complimentary sweet treats of cheesecake, shooters, and sipped champagne cocktails. In addition, guests had the opportunity to register for a MRewards Package door prize valued at $2,025! Attendees enjoyed speaking with our skincare professionals, learning about the new products and skincare treatment options available, visiting with a CAbi fashion consultant and speaking with Psychic Leslie.
Featured presentation for the night included the latest new skincare treatments, ThermiSmooth and Thermi Aesthetics.
ThermiSmooth™ is one of two ThermiAesthetics™ treatments Midwest Facial Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Skincare offers, each of which uses radio frequency to achieve skin rejuvenation. ThermiSmooth™ is the least invasive of the ThermiAesthetics™ treatments, administering gentle heat on the surface of the skin. The ThermiSmooth™ hand piece is used to heat the epidermis to about 107 degrees Fahrenheit. A gel is applied to the treatment area, which helps the hand piece glide smoothly over the skin as the head is applied. When heated to this temperature, fibroblasts in the skin are stimulated, creating more collagen over time. Collagen is a protein that supports the skin, giving it elasticity and a youthful appearance.
ThermiTight™ delivers controlled thermal energy under the skin to reverse signs of aging. ThermiTight™ is ideal for patients who want more results than traditional non-invasive procedures but do not want surgery. ThermiTight™ is a micro-invasive procedure that typically takes one hour with little to no downtime. A tiny probe is inserted under the skin. Then, radio frequency is applied, causing tissue to shrink.
Launched at the Open House is our new MRewards package for guests to enjoy an affordable way to get beautiful, healthy-looking skin. This combination of Facials, Peels, and SkinPen Treatments will keep your face looking beautiful and feeling fresh all year long! Purchased separately, these services are valued at $2,025, though MRewards Members receive this great package for $1,190*! A savings of 41%!

Love Without Boundaries (LWB)
Love Without Boundaries is a phenomenal organization that began in the year 2003 after a group of adoptive parents came together to help save the life of one tiny boy in China. Following his successful heart surgery, they realized that people with a pure love for helping children can truly make a difference. The foundation has grown from providing a handful of surgeries and baby formula in 2003 to touching the lives of thousands of children today through many programs.

What are free radicals?
Ah, oxygen! That cleansing, deep breath is necessary to live. Yet oxygen can also have negative effects. Cells in the body function best when their molecules are stable (which some may recall from chemistry means having a full set of electrons). When oxygen enters the picture, though, those molecules often lose an electron and form what is commonly referred to as a free radical. Generally, free radicals attack the nearest stable molecule and take its electron, thus stabilizing itself. When the attacked molecule loses an electron, it now becomes a free radical, beginning a chain reaction. This process is called oxidation. Though oxidation is naturally occurring and common (for example, the brown discoloration of an apple left on a countertop is due to oxidation), it can cause damage to cells. Within the skin, free radicals stimulate enzymes, which break down collagen and elastin, two main components for firm and wrinkle-free skin.
Why do we need antioxidants?
Antioxidants neutralize the effects of free radicals by donating one of their own electrons, and thus ended the ‘electron-stealing’ oxidation reaction. Products containing antioxidant ingredients can help slow oxidation and protect that precious collagen. Vitamins A, C, and E are common and powerful antioxidants found in the body. SkinMedica® offers many products that pack potent antioxidant power including: Vitamin C + E Complex, TNS Essential Serum®, Dermal Repair Cream and TNS Recovery Complex®. Used as part of your skincare regimen, these products can help protect against free radical damage.
A beautiful, flawless face is everyones dream. There are, however, many things to consider when purchasing makeup to help you achieve this look.
Advanced makeup formulations that are pharmaceutical-grade use natural high-pigment minerals and the power of antioxidants to help cover and correct any current skin conditions you many have.
By doing this, they deliver unsurpassed coverage, broad-spectrum UV protection and help combat damage from free radicals. At MWFP, we love and carry the GloMinerals® makeup line. Why, you ask?
- Premium Grade Ingredients: GloMinerals® does not contain any perfumes, chemical dyes, talc or parabens. Further, every product is non-comedogenic (non-pore-clogging), so oily-skinned women rejoice!
- Antioxidant Power: GloMinerals® products contain vitamins A, C, E and green tea extract to maintain your healthy skin and protect it from further sun damage.
- Broad-Spectrum UVA and UVB Protection: GloMinerals® foundation protects skin by using titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, the two most effective mineral ingredients for broad-spectrum sun protection.
With warmer days ahead, now is the time to bring out that bronzer! The name of the game? Fake the look of a sun worshipper and avoid those damaging rays of the sun! Apply bronzer (we love GloMinerals® Bronze in Sunkiss) to where the sun would naturally land on the skincheekbones, the bridge of the nose and hairline. Finish with a soft wash of color on the apples of the cheeks GloMinerals® Blush in bellini, hibiscus or rosebud are all popular and flattering blushes.
With a perfectly contoured, sun-kissed face, its time to turn to your body. GloMinerals® Body Bronzer creates a subtle, immediate all-over tan on all skin types. Now grab that bronzer and hope for warmer weather!
Dr. Christopher Tolan, facial plastic surgeon, is a contributing supporter and health care provider for congenital cleft lip, palate and nasal deformities. He recently participated in a mission trip to Kiafeng, China with the organization Love Without Boundaries (LWB). Dr. Tolan has been a member of the LWB Team for many years and enjoys being a part of this organization dedicated to helping those with cleft issues. This Spring 2014, Dr. Tolan was one of a team of medical doctors who took the trip to Kiafeng, China. Drs. Tolan and Ness provided cleft surgery care; Drs. Kathy Clinch and Neil Derschin provided pediatric anesthesia services. Along with several other nurses and support staff, the group traveled to Kiafeng Children's Hospital in the Henan province of China to exchange knowledge and perform cleft surgeries on children from Chinese healing homes and orphanages. During this medical mission trip, the doctors shared their knowledge of the latest developments and advances in the treatment of cleft deformity, while the Chinese medical staff shared their expertise. Through intercontinental collaboration, the Chinese medical staff gained invaluable knowledge of medical techniques, the American team gained greater knowledge of their specialty, and dozens of children received lifesaving cleft surgery in the best conditions.
During this mission trip, Dr. Tolan was joined by a group of volunteers who assisted him from support in the operating room, to holding babies and logging in children as they arrived for their evaluations and surgeries. This is a phenomenally large operation that requires lots of hard work, patience, and dedication throughout the year. Knowing that many children will be given new smiles, however, is rewarding for all involved in the process. Dr. Tolan is proud to be a part of this journey—sharing knowledge with others and creating beautiful new smiles.
The LWB organization was founded in 2003 after a group of adoptive parents came together to help save the life of one tiny boy in China.
